Jonas Vingegaard Abandons 2026 Tour de France After High-Speed Crash

Jonas Vingegaard crashed hard on stage 15 of the Tour de France and abandoned the race.

Vingegaard hit the tarmac Sunday along with his teammate Sepp Kuss, GC contender Isaac del Toro, and a handful others on a sweeping right-hand bend 19km from the finish of the stage to Plateau de Solaison.

The 29-year-old was quickly on his feet after he fell, but climbed straight into the medical car with a sling around his shoulder.

He also appeared to have hit his head in the high-speed fall.

Others who fell were able to continue racing.

Visma-Lease a Bike published the following statement to social media after the stage:

“Following a crash in Stage 15 of the Tour de France, Jonas sustained a fractured collarbone and multiple abrasions. Due to the severity of the collarbone fracture, surgical intervention has been recommended and will be performed in the coming days. Join us in wishing Jonas a smooth recovery.”

Sunday had already started on the wrong foot for Vingegaard.

He and Pogačar were controversially woken overnight for anti-doping tests.

Vingegaard’s exit is a huge blow for the Tour de France.

With two Tour de France titles and victories at both the Giro d’Italia and Vuelta a España, he was one of the headline names in the race.

Vingegaard was second overall Sunday and way adrift of his archrival Tadej Pogačar at 4:30 back.

However, after two consecutive defeats to the Slovenian, the climbing ace refused to give up the chase for a third yellow jersey.

His Visma-Lease a Bike team had been controlling throughout Sunday’s 15th stage through the Vosges as Vingegaard looked to wrestle back time before the third week in the Alps.

The Dane also needed to consolidate his second on GC from a tight-knit pack of upcoming stars behind him.

The crash occurred as the bunch was poised for a huge brawl on the Plateau de Solaison summit finish. The HC ascent was by far the hardest of the race so far and was touted to be a climb that would shape the final GC.

Vingegaard was the first to fall as the massed peloton sped toward the base of the climb.

His front wheel appeared to slip out as he took a tight bend cluttered with road furniture. He skidded into the verge, and others came down behind him.

The race slowed to regroup in the aftermath of the incident, and Pogačar was seen speaking into his radio.

The stage resumed around a kilometer later, and Remco Evenepoel blasted to a standout mountaintop win. However, the 2026 Tour de France won’t be the same again.
