The physical talent which earned Tom Dumoulin victory in the 2017 Giro d’Italia plus second in the Tour de France showed once again on Sunday, with the Dutchman posting a stomping time in the NYC Marathon.
Dumoulin made his marathon debut just over a year ago in Amsterdam, logging 2:29:21. It was a very impressive performance, not least because he made a mess of his pacing and blew up.
This time around he judged things better in New York and covered the distance more than two minutes quicker.
“Amazing experience @nycmarathon!!!” he wrote on Instagram.
“Loved every minute! What a day… Blessed to share it with the family.
“Oh, and a nice PR with 2.27.12. I’ll be shuffling the streets of New York for another two days, instead of walking, but it was worth it, haha!”
Dumoulin was a WorldTour pro for 10 years, with his biggest successes coming with Team Sunweb. He won the Giro and the TT worlds in 2017, and also took stages in the Tour de France, the Giro d’Italia and the Vuelta a España. He was second in both the Giro and the Tour in 2018.
However he struggled mentally at times with the demands of the sport and retired in August 2022 at just 31 years of age.
He turned his attention to running and made that marathon debut last October.
“Of course, I started way too fast,” Dumoulin told HLN at the time. “I was running so well that I thought, ‘I’ll see.’ I don’t do that on the bike. I know what I can do and how to pace myself when I’m riding.
“With running, I secretly know that too, but I just enjoy it.”
His ambitious approach saw him run the first half of that marathon in 1:09, but the second in 1:20, reflecting the weakening he experienced. He also suffered cramp.
This time around he presumably did things in a better way, although detailed race results and splits were not available at the time of writing.
Swedish runner Andreas Almgren won in 2:06:01, 13 seconds faster than Yemaneberhan Crippa of Italy.
The best women’s time was that of the Kenyan runner Sheila Chepkirui, who covered the course in 2:24:36.
Dumoulin wasn’t quite as quick, but appeared to be very satisfied with his time.
He previous ran a 1:10:16 for the half marathon in 2023.
