Thomas Silva crashed at the final corner of Gran Piemonte on Thursday and four riders rode over him in the latest harrowing scene from a bruising week of racing in Italy.
Roadside footage captured by a fan shows the XDS-Astana rider screaming in pain as the peloton speeds past and a few even ride over his legs.
Silva was charging toward the line before he overcooked a right-hander and slammed into the fencing.
He slipped onto the asphalt and his legs were splayed into the pathway of the oncoming bunch. At least four riders struck his legs before Silva curled into the fetal position.
It’s a brutal sequence to watch. Fans frantically wave at approaching riders to slow down and steer clear, but Silva was directly in their path and there was nowhere to go for some of the ongoing riders.
Incredibly, Silva managed to stand up, get back on the bike, and finish 90th.
Team officials confirmed to Velo on Friday that the Uruguayan escaped serious injury in what was his final race of 2026.
“We had the mind and situation to end the season differently. We had a very nice season,” Silva wrote on social media. “But no complaints, thanks for the trust team!”
XDS-Astana’s Alberto Bettiol pushed on to take third behind winner Dorian Godon (Netcompany-Ineos) and Anthon Charmig (Uno-X).

Everything was coming together for Silva until the final corner.
“We were in the perfect position. Unfortunately, Thomas crashed on the final corner and wasn’t there in the final sprint,” Bettiol said. “Otherwise, I really believe we could have finished first and second. But in the end, I took third place and I’m happy with the result in the end of the season.”
For Silva, 24, it was a painful way to end a breakout season.
He won a Giro d’Italia stage and wore the maglia rosa, won back-to-back one-day wins in Spain, and a stage plus the overall at the Arctic Race of Norway.
Silva recently extended his contract through 2029, and Thursday was his last scheduled race of 2026.

Silva’s crash was the latest in a disturbing string of viral clips in a week of high-profile incidents and safety miscues across Italy.
At Monday’s Coppa Bernocchi, a DHL delivery van pulled onto the route after the breakaway passed with about 19km remaining.
Nobody crashed in that incident, and organizers later apologized.
A separate high-speed crash near the finish left Andrea Raccagni (Soudal Quick-Step) with a fractured neck vertebra. Cofidis rider Alex Aranburu fractured his collarbone and part of his pelvis.
At Tuesday’s Tre Valli Varesine, Marcel Camprubí and Thomas Gloag were involved in a collision with a police motorcycle traveling against the direction of the race.
Camprubí continued, but Gloag abandoned and needed stitches in his knee. Their Pinarello-Q36.5 captain Tom Pidcock said he was so angry he considered stopping before continuing to finish second.
“We were going 70kph on a descent and went into a round-about. We saw a motorbike coming towards us, and Thomas Gloag and me, we hit the bike,” Camprubí told Eurosport. “We are both really lucky that we were not in the hospital.
“It’s a bit frustrating, because these things happen and happen and happen, and nothing changes,” he said. “We are waiting for the facts. The team is speaking with the organization and the police, and we are still waiting for the responses.
“I think everybody can make mistakes, but when we are talking about life, we should be a bit more cautious.”
All eyes will be on Il Lombardia on Saturday, the season’s final monument and the last major race for some of the biggest stars in the elite men’s peloton.
