The 2027 Giro d’Italia Women starts by the beach, but anyone chasing pink better bring their climbing legs.
An uphill time trial, two summit finishes, and a final showdown in the shadow of Mont Blanc headline a nine-stage route unveiled in Rome that leaves the climbers plenty to chew on.
Defending champion Demi Vollering will have her hands full, if she decides to return next season.
Running May 29 to June 6, the race covers 1,132km and packs in 17,450m of climbing between the seaside start in Viareggio and the mountainous finale in the Aosta Valley.
That is plenty of vertical packed into nine days for the season’s first women’s grand tour after La Vuelta Femenina is moved to October.
The first major summit comes on stage 4, from Credaro to Passo della Presolana. Two days later, the Bergamo to Madesimo-Valle Spluga stage delivers another uphill finish that should help separate the pink jersey contenders.
Passo San Marco tops out at 1,987m to claim the Cima Alfonsina Strada as the race’s highest point.
Then comes the hard part.
The Valdigne Tudor uphill time trial is stacked up with the closing Monte Bianco stage in the final weekend to guarantee the race won’t be decided until the last summit.
The sprinters get three stages early on, with two hilly stages offering opportunities for attackers. Three mountain stages and the uphill time trial complete the menu.
